INTERVIEW SURVIVAL

There are many common reasons why a candidate is rejected after an interview:

1. Inability to clearly express him or herself
2. Poor personal appearance
3. Lack of confidence
4. Lack of preparation gaining knowledge of company
5. Evasiveness
6. More interested in salary and benefits than in career prospects

DO

• Allow yourself plenty of time before and after the interview
• Re-confirm with your consultant the date, time and place of the interview, as well as the name and title of interviewer
• Be prepared - know about the company and the position, remember to read job specifications
• Know yourself - identify your strengths and weaknesses, skills and abilities
• Maintain eye contact
• Be relaxed, but formal - project self-confidence, not over-confidence
• Be concise - give enough information to answer the question properly in a clear, concise way
• Be honest - give the best possible responses you can - accentuate the positive by talking about what you can do or have done
• Be interested and friendly - engage with the interviewer
• Be yourself - there is no one single person an interviewer is looking for

DONT
• Keep your interviewer waiting
• Schedule interviews directly before or after another interview
• Be unprepared about the basic details of your interview
• Be unprepared as to the details of the job
• Be unprepared to talk about what you could bring to the role
• Gaze around the room and out of the window
• Fidget or slouch - you may look like your too confident
• Babble or just talk for the sake of talking or to fill silence
• Lie about your experience or ability to do the job
• Look like you are bored with the questions being asked
• Be what you think the person is looking for - you stand a better chance just being yourself
